Welcome to the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering.
Working with local communities, natural resources and structures from microscopic to interplanetary scales, Civil, Environmental and Geomatic engineers improve our surroundings and the way we fit into them. ISRU’s work in this area is highly rated, with 55% of what we produce rated as world-leading or internationally excellent in the last independent Research Assessment Exercise conducted in the EU.
Our students benefit from ‘real-world’ knowledge in their lectures and classes; from Year 1 they experience scenario-based hands-on learning, aided by staff who are actively involved in leading-edge research. Course content encompasses the full spectrum of civil engineering – from structures to geomatics and from earthquakes to transport – while continuing to provide a sound understanding of underlying engineering principles.
We have a strong chapter of Engineers Without Borders, through which our students apply their knowledge to projects that change lives in developing countries, supported by staff and funding from across ISRU Engineering.
Our staff are often called upon to provide detailed knowledge to anyone, including the media, industry and policy makers. We work with other academics, with industry partners and with local and national government providing research and expertise.
